{"id":965,"date":"2015-05-11T16:02:17","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T16:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/franchlife.com\/?p=965"},"modified":"2015-05-12T01:09:52","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T01:09:52","slug":"puppy-makes-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/franchlife.com\/?p=965","title":{"rendered":"Puppy Makes History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you welcome a new puppy in your home, it isn\u2019t a matter of <u>if<\/u> your puppy will chew up something, it\u2019s <u>when<\/u> and <u>what<\/u>. \u00a0It isn\u2019t a segment on the evening news when a new puppy owner comes home to find a half-chewed sandal, or a shredded pillow, or a gnawed wooden chair leg. \u00a0You know this, so you do your best to protect your belongings by supervising your puppy as much as possible until it knows better. \u00a0Our puppy Sassy was still learning what\u2019s hers and what\u2019s ours when we all went to bed one night, each thinking someone else had made sure she was secure in her crate. \u00a0When Sassy greeted my husband at the bottom of the stairs in the early morning hours the next day, it was one of those \u201coh-no\u201d moments. \u00a0She had chosen to chew the edge of the\u00a0Bible left on the coffee table. \u00a0How can you discipline any creature wanting to spend time with God\u2019s Word? \u00a0Time has now past since that day and as time with a puppy increases on the x-axis, the number of chewed items you don\u2019t want chewed up decreases on the y-axis. \u00a0So, Sassy is often left out of her crate unattended on our gated property. \u00a0Well, the other day we arrived home to find chewed plastic all over the driveway. \u00a0\u201cWhat&#8230;is&#8230;that?\u201d we all said in unison. \u00a0It turns out Sassy had found an open donated box of medical supplies my husband left in the garage to bring to his next medical clinic. \u00a0He\u2019s the medical director of a clinic that provides free medical care to refugees in the city of San Antonio so we often have extra medical supplies scattered around. \u00a0Well, if you gathered up the chewed pieces and fit &#8217;em together like it&#8217;s a\u00a0jigsaw puzzle, you probably still wouldn\u2019t have guessed what it was. \u00a0Sassy had actually spent an afternoon chewing up a foley catheter and drainage bag. \u00a0 And, just like Humpty Dumpty, it couldn&#8217;t be put back together again. \u00a0I\u2019m sure she\u2019s the only puppy in the history of the world that has chewed up a thin, sterile tube that\u2019s inserted into your bladder to drain urine and the bag that collects it. \u00a0Or maybe your puppy also prefers catheters to bones?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you welcome a new puppy in your home, it isn\u2019t a matter of if your puppy will chew up something, it\u2019s when and what. \u00a0It isn\u2019t a segment on the evening news when a new puppy owner comes home to find a half-chewed sandal, or a shredded pillow, or a gnawed wooden chair leg.
