It wasn\u2019t when he returned home from his first deployment to Iraq. \u00a0It wasn\u2019t the day our children sprinted into his outstretched arms as the surrounding crowd cheered in the airport after his tour in Afghanistan either. \u00a0Our children were very proud of their father for serving in the military knowing how he worked tirelessly to save the lives of injured soldiers. \u00a0But, he didn\u2019t become a hero in our children\u2019s eyes until the day they witnessed with their own eyes their father in a life-n-death moment on our franch. \u00a0The story goes… \u00a0The first cow on our franch had given birth before our family just moments ago. \u00a0Our children had witnessed the miracle of birth, something that my husband and I dreamed years before that a franch would give to our children. \u00a0But, immediately my husband knew something had gone wrong. \u00a0All of a sudden, my husband was beside the still calf all the way across the field. \u00a0I don\u2019t even remember how he got from next to me to that calf without what seemed like any time passing. \u00a0He yelled out that she wasn\u2019t breathing. \u00a0I remember it being in such a way that he wasn\u2019t yelling it at us. \u00a0He was yelling it to himself. \u00a0He later said that all he could think of was how his children couldn\u2019t witness something so wonderful end so horribly. \u00a0All the years of study and practice in responding immediately to life-n-death situations with a calm mind and steady hands made him seem as though he had rehearsed every move he made. \u00a0He pulled away the amniotic sac that was covering the calf\u2019s nose and preventing her first breath. \u00a0Still not breathing. \u00a0So, he effortlessly picked her up and draped her over the fence. \u00a0Holding her head upright, he cleared the fluid away from her nose and tickled her nostrils to promote her breathing. \u00a0Still not breathing. \u00a0Without hesitation, he blew his first breath into the nostrils of the calf. \u00a0Still not breathing. \u00a0Again. \u00a0Again. \u00a0Then, again. \u00a0Until the next breathe was the calf\u2019s first. \u00a0My husband immediately carried her over to mama cow and it was amazing to see the instincts of a first-time mother cow caring for her calf. \u00a0\u201cDaddy, you\u2019re a hero!\u201d yelled one, then all of our children. \u00a0They were beaming with pride over what their daddy had done. \u00a0He turned to us with a huge grin. \u00a0His beard was dripping wet with amniotic fluid tinted a dark red and who knows what else. \u00a0Without any hesitation, I\u00a0kissed him anyway! \u00a0He had indeed saved her life! \u00a0Our youngest daughter to this day likes to tell of how her father became a\u00a0hero when he gave, in her words, \u201cmouth to face\u201d to save our calf.<\/p>\n
