It’s springtime. \u00a0The “Baby Chicks are Here” signs are up. \u00a0And every Thursday morning, \u00a0the local feed store gets 300 chicks. \u00a0By Thursday afternoon, almost all the chicks are gone. \u00a0By Thursday night, there\u2019s not a single one left. \u00a0Isn\u2019t that crazy? \u00a0Every week in early spring, hundreds of chicks are given homes in the\u00a0backyards of the Texas hill country. \u00a0Sometimes I feel like I\u2019m the only one crazy enough to keep adding chickens to our homestead every year. \u00a0But, apparently, I\u2019m either not as crazy as I thought or there’s a LOT of crazy people living within a 30 mile\u00a0radius\u00a0of that feed store. \u00a0Like every year, this spring, my chicken-crazed kids had asked to\u00a0raise another batch of chicks. \u00a0 There was no way I could say no when my eldest daughter handed me a glass milk jar filled with money. \u00a0Without me knowing it, she had been saving for her very own Golden Laced Polish chickens for weeks. \u00a0Well, if we were going to do this, again, I wanted my husband\u2019s help picking out the healthiest dozen. \u00a0So, on a Tuesday night, I opened the\u00a0calendar on his laptop left on the kitchen counter and added \u201cChickens\u201d at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 10th. \u00a0Our alarms sounded early that day so we could be outside the feed store well before opening. \u00a0Believe it or not, there’s often a line of people waiting for the store to open on chick day. \u00a0As we pulled into the parking lot, my husband started getting texts from his confused ER residents wanting to know what “Chickens” at 8 a.m. meant. \u00a0Oh no! \u00a0Somehow I had added it to my husband\u2019s shared Google work calendar instead of his personal one!! \u00a0One text was a photo of the ER resident schedule, and indeed every resident had been\u00a0alerted that there was \u201cChickens at 8 a.m.\u201d \u00a0Our children thought mommy’s mistake was hilarious and so did I!\u00a0 Moments later though, our smiles turned to frowns when the clerk unlocked the front door and told us the chicks had come in yesterday, a day early this week, and were already sold out!! \u00a0Later in the\u00a0day, a resident had a quick exchange with my husband that went something like: \u00a0\u201cDid you get your chicks?\u201d says resident. \u00a0\u201cNo, sold out,” says sad husband. \u00a0“Of course they were, we all knew it was time to get us some chicks. \u00a0Next time don\u2019t put it on our calendar, and maybe there’ll be some left for you!” jokes resident. \u00a0Well, my husband and I don’t like to wait when our mind is made up to do something, so that morning, we drove straight home and ordered one of the last batches available directly from\u00a0a hatchery (yes, you can mail-order live chicks). \u00a0Mission accomplished — our chicks are on their way. \u00a0And, my husband\u2019s ER residents happened to learn an important lesson\u00a0of\u00a0the day should they ever franch, “Chicks sell out fast, and you better have a good plan to get them before they\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
