{"id":1219,"date":"2015-11-30T21:24:02","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T21:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/franchlife.com\/?p=1219"},"modified":"2015-12-08T15:56:57","modified_gmt":"2015-12-08T15:56:57","slug":"dinner-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/franchlife.com\/?p=1219","title":{"rendered":"Dinner Conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t remember what I made for dinner the other night. \u00a0But, I do remember the conversation. \u00a0And now, you will too. \u00a0We do our best to eat meals together as a family. \u00a0It is said, \u201cA family who eats together, stays together.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019d edit that, adding to it, and say, \u201cA family who eats <i>and talks\u00a0<\/i>together <i>and doesn&#8217;t forget to say grace<\/i> stays together.&#8221; \u00a0Our family talks about everything under the sun and in the heavens above after giving God thanks for the food on our table. \u00a0In our home, there&#8217;s often\u00a0talk of the latest on the franch. \u00a0And so it went the other night\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to castrate the bull calf tomorrow,\u201d my husband said in such a matter-of-fact way you\u2019d think he says it every day. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to be home in the morning and do it while you are at school, so you won\u2019t be able to help\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait, dad, what does that mean&#8230;what do you have to do to Sunrise?\u201d interrupted our six-year-old daughter. \u00a0There was silence. \u00a0My husband was about to drink his water but instead slowly lowered his glass without taking a sip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOhhhh, um, well it means, that well,\u201d he cleared his throat, \u201c\u2026I\u2019m going to\u2026I need to do something so he won\u2019t be able to have babies anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our daughter gave him a look like he was being silly\u2026again. \u00a0\u201cDaaaad, boys can\u2019t have babies\u2026,\u201d she corrected. \u00a0She giggled like he was teasing her.<\/p>\n<p>My husband looked at me pleading with his eyes for help. \u00a0I just smiled back enjoying watching him squirm. \u00a0He got himself in this situation, he can get himself out. \u00a0I glanced at our two older kids who had stopped eating and were just staring at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>My husband turned to our ten-year-old son who loves to read science books from the library on his own and just last year had come across a chapter on reproduction. \u00a0By the way, I highly recommend that way!! \u00a0It&#8217;s way less awkward. \u00a0So knowing my son was &#8220;in the know,&#8221; my husband said, \u201cI know, why don\u2019t YOU explain it to her, son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our son froze and stared wide-eyed at him like a deer caught in headlights. \u00a0His eyes begged, <i>please don&#8217;t make me<\/i><em>\u2026 \u00a0<\/em>Breaking his promise to his fourth-grade teacher, our son began with, \u201cUmmmmm&#8230;.ookkaay&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I realized our sweet, obedient son was actually going to try. \u00a0I scolded my husband by saying his name sternly. \u00a0Our son was off the hook and stopped fidgeting.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, my husband came out with, \u201cWell, boys, um&#8230;boys, you see, have to help with making the babies, and he, well he won\u2019t be able to\u2026help anymore.&#8221; \u00a0True, but, that\u2019s leaving out a lot of details! \u00a0<i>He&#8217;s not going to get away with just that<\/i>, I thought.<\/p>\n<p>We all looked in our daughter\u2019s direction dreading the follow-up question. \u00a0Will that be enough for her?
